Temporary Residence – Family Reunion

Temporary residence for the purpose of family reunion may be granted to an applicant for the duration of their family member's residence, with a maximum validity of 5 years. The following individuals are eligible for this type of residence:

  • Family members of individuals with temporary or permanent residence in Slovakia.

  • Relatives in the direct ascending line of an asylum holder who is under 18 years old.

  • Dependent persons as defined by an international treaty.

Family members are defined as:

  • Spouses who are at least 18 years old.

  • Unmarried children under 18 years old of the person with granted residence or their spouse.

  • Dependent unmarried children over 18 years old of the person with granted residence or their spouse, who are unable to care for themselves due to a long-term unfavorable health condition.

  • Parents of the person with granted residence or their spouse who are dependent on their care and lack appropriate family support in their country of origin.

A person with temporary residence for family reunion purposes is entitled to:

  • Engage in business.

  • Work with a valid work permit for up to 12 months from the date of receiving the temporary residence.

  • Work without additional permits after 12 months from receiving the temporary residence.
